Background
Esherick Homsey Dodge and Davis (EHDD Architecture), is a San Francisco-based architecture and design firm founded in 1946 by celebrated California modernist architect Joseph Esherick. The firm distinguished itself as a leader in sustainability, and with signature projects including Sea Ranch and Monterey Bay Aquarium. In 2013 the firm will celebrate the opening of its design of the new San Francisco Exploratorium on Pier 15.
In short, EHDD was doing “green” building long before “green” was cool.
Challenge
While EHDD was an unquestioned leader in sustainable design – decades before today’s saturated architectural services market – the rising tide of “green” marketing has shadowed EHDD’s advantage.
At the same time, with a distinguished portfolio of “Net Zero” buildings, opportunities for urban planning in the developing world, and a sensational portfolio of important civic projects – the opportunities for growth appear endless for EHDD.
Smartly, EHDD recognized the need to reclaim a clear, focused brand, to drive the right kind of growth. In 2011 the firm engaged Stoke in a research, brand definition and strategic planning process, to establish its position in the market, and shape service delivery for future years.
Outcome
Stoke conducted external market research, including EHDD”s clients, prospects, partners and industry luminaries. The research was supplemented with a competitive assessment and brand experience audit.
This research and implications were shared with the firm’s leadership, partners and associates at an executive retreat, facilitated by Stoke at San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace.
Working with EHDD’s leadership, Stoke then derived an organizational brand position, Advancing Civilization.
Facilitated by Stoke, EHDD’s brand expression and related business strategies have begun rolling out, including a new brand identity and Web site.
